Ezyon DCO, Beit Omar, CP 300
Bethlehem and Surroundings, Mon. Aug. 8, 05 PMObservers: Shlomit S., Yael S. (reporting)Oh….Bethlehem CP 300: One detainee near the oak tree. He looks young, upon calm observation we decided this wasn not worth intervention. We drove on to the DCO. El Khadr Full of action. We didn’t stop. It’s quite a few weeks now that we drive past and assume that all is routine there. Ezyon DCO: When we arrivede there were three people–one summoned to the GSS and two that arrived shortly before us and were served. We took advantage of the quiet to sit with Maher who had been at his home in Shfaram on thursday and heard about the present situation there. It was a facinating conversation. After the tasty coffee we returned to the DCO where suddently there were people.Medical permits and others were served, including a GSS restricted person who returned with no permit and two other medical permits. One medical case was not resolved: the story in a nutshell: the patient (cancer in the brain) a resident of the Hebron area, GSS restricted (is ill for 4 years now and paralyized in his left hand and has lost the ability of speaking…but he is GSS restricted) and his brother, a resident of Bethlehem applied for a permit to visit neuro-oncology unit in Hadassah–for thursday. At 10:30 the brother who will accompany the patient applied at the Hebron DCO, and was sent from there to the Ezyon DCO, even though he told the soldier at the window said that the patient belongs to the Hebron district, the soldier instructed him to apply at Ezyon. At the Ezyon DCO the application was accepted but because the patient is GSS restricted and belongs to the Hebron district they adamantly refused to pass the documents on to the health coordinators. Finally, the brother requesting the permit sent his documents by fax directly to the health coordinators and was served. A letter of complaint about the resfusal to report a health coordination application will be sent (in cooperation!!!) with other agencies. We drove down to Beit Omar instead of sitting comfortably and encountered two Hummers on one side and tens of children on the other side of the road. There was a funeral for a patient who had died, the children went in the direction of the road, and that is already a reason for some action (i.e. throwing stones on passing cars). Shlomit spoke with the soldiers and calmed them down and I called the district commander Ilan Dyan who spoke with the coordination center. I approached the children to speak with them. The children spoke against the occupation and “why did you take Palestine away from us?” and they wanted to see the army leave the place. A number of adults guarded me and asked the children to calm down…because I was an object of curiosity for a number of children I distanced myself from the road, and they came after me…finally most of them entered the truck that took them to the village and the Hummers left, ten minuets later all was back to normal. About ten minuets ago a molitov coctail was thrown in El Khadr. PErhaps we should stop there after all, despite the parking problem?

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
- The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
