| Morning

The paratroopers have left the city and the battalion of  Nahal Shacham Battalion came to show their presence in Hebron. All soldiers in all positions. All guard booths, everywhere with their weapons in hand ready to use. Pretty scary. (I don’t photograph  soldiers). The coming Sabbath will be the Sabbath reading of  the “Life of Sarah”. The Jewish community committee is waiting for more than 30,000 guests. In the Cave of the Patriarchs, there will be more days of “Jewish apartheid ” in which only Jews will be allowed to pray. The Patriarchs Cave parking lot was closed and large tents were built there to welcome.

When we arrived we saw a gathering near the Patriarchs. It turns out that Hebron Municipality, in cooperation with the Civil Administration, was  building  and renovating there pedestrian sidewalks. Only they bothered to inform only the Jewish residents and not the Palestinians.

Noam Arnon stands at the door of the casba and the Nahal soldiers come to open the gate for him.  He walks accompanied by army officials who were already waiting for him on the other side.  While he was waiting we spoke for about 20 minutes.  This time he was not so chauvinistic and told me that during shabbat they will do tours of the market. And this he is preparing. He is looking for Palestinian hosts on the H1 side who will explain that they also prefer to live with the Jews. We asked if he would be prepared to live under Palestinian sovereignty in Hebron with a Palestinian ID but he did not anwer.

We arranged to continue talking …….

In my experience from the past, the Palestinians prefer to stay in their homes this weekend. Every outing will cost  them abuse and bullying.

May this weekend go peacefully and may the occupation come to an end.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
      2. Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox

      6. Tarpat (1929) CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
