Huwwara Beit Furik CP Thursday 2.11.06, PMObservers: Hagar L, Ronit K (reporting)Translation: Ruth F. 14:15- 17:30Restrictions:Huwwara: Men between the ages 18-25 from Nablus and the residents of villages under siege were not allowed to exit Nablus.Biet Furik: No one was allowed to enter or exit the villages Beit Furik and Beit Dajan, except the villagers. People from the villages Salem, Azmut and Dir El Hatab, were not allowed to pass through Beit Furik and Beit Dajan.Activity hours at Huwwara:- The entrance to Nablus through the turnstiles is accessible all day long.- Pedestrians may exit between 5:00-20:00.- Entering and exiting by car is only possible with a permit. This passage is usually accessible until 19:00. Specification of events: 14:12 Barukin- The road was still blocked. We saw a cab going down a dirt path trying to by pass the blockage.14:25 Za’atara junction- There wasn’t much traffic. Two vehicles were standing from west and four were at the north. 14:35 Beita market- Very busy. 14:40 Burin junction- One car was standing from the west.14:45 Huwwara checkpoint- There were very few people and cars. About 10 people were standing in the checkpoint. 15:00 Beit Furik checkpoint- Again, there wasn’t much traffic, there were few people and cars. After a while a truck arrived. The driver was from Tubas, he was giving a lift to a family from Nablus. The soldiers wouldn’t let him pass. The family got off, and one of the girls began to cry. His pleadings and explanations didn’t help. He was forced to return to Tubas through the by passing road. At 15:25 he tried passing by foot but was refused again.A resident of Beit Furik that got married two months ago to a young woman from Syniria, was escorted by his wife and mother in law. They wanted to get to Beit Furik and visit his family. He couldn’t issue his marital license because of the strike at the Palestinian Ministry of Interior. His wife didn’t have the opportunity to change the details written in her ID, her address and personal status. The man offered to leave his ID at the checkpoint until they finish their visit (about an hour). The Soldiers had a long conversation which came to an end when proof was found to the fact that the couple is married: the wedding ring on the young woman’s finger. They were now permitted to pass to Beit Furik. 15:20- A large queue was beginning to from, most of them were cabs heading from Nablus. There were also 20 pedestrians. 15:30- Awarata merchandise checkpoint- Cars were lined up in both sides of the checkpoint and of the lot, which is used for loading and unloading merchandise. There were many trucks. This was the first working day after Aid El Fiter. The work was being done under the pouring rain. A trailer driver, that wasn’t the owner of the vehicle, wasn’t allowed to pass through the checkpoint to the south, even though he merely wanted to get to his home at Beita. A truck driver from Awarta wasn’t given permission because his permit was out of date and he hadn’t renewed it on time. 15:45 Huwwara checkpoint- There wasn’t much traffic. The passage at the pedestrian’s checkpoint was rather fluent and quick. One person even asked me with wonder: “What’s going on today?”. There was one policewoman from the BP that was very rood, people left hurt and angry because of her. A pedestrian yelled at us: “Hitler was a good man”. Although there were few pedestrians the police woman kept insulting them and shouting at them: “Yalla, Erja, Roh'”. When her shift ended everything calmed down.An Arab with an Israeli ID who came for Beer Sheva, entered Nablus without going through and inspection at the turnstiles, he was therefore caught when trying to get out. He was detained until the soldiers finished checking his details with the police. He claimed that there was no sign in front of the turnstiles that pointed out that it is forbidden to pass to Nablus ( he is right, ever since the tracks for pedestrians entering Nablus was moved, it’s impossible to see the sign that says the Israelis can’t enter). He was released after 20 minutes.A man tried to enter Nablus through the road with a big trolley. The soldiers yelled at his and told him to come back and pass through the turnstiles. He explained that he couldn’t pass through there. He wouldn’t listen. One soldier said that he will soon examine his suitcase. But the whole thing took ages. Hagar asked them why they wouldn’t put the trolley inside the x-ray machine and let him go. Afterwards she spoke to the checkpoint commander that agreed to let the man pass without any inspections. It appears that the whole delay was for nothing.A cab driver that headed out of Nablus was sent back since he was under 25 years old. 17:00 -We left.

    • One of the three internal checkpoints that closed on the city of Nablus - Beit Furik to the east, Hawara to the south, Beit Iba to the west. The checkpoint is located at the junction of Roads 557 (an apartheid road that was forbidden for Palestinians), leading to the Itamar and Alon Morea settlements and Road 5487. The checkpoint was established in 2001 for pedestrians and vehicles; The opening hours were short and the transition was slow and very problematic.
Allegedly, the checkpoint is intended to monitor the movement to and from Nablus of the residents of Beit Furik and Beit Dajan, being the only opening outside their villages. Since May 2009 the checkpoint is open 24 hours a day, the military presence is limited, vehicles can pass through it without inspections, except for random inspections. (Updated April 2010)

    • The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre  since 2001  two shifts a day -  morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower.  Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.

On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.

Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and  a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The  "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.

On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.
