JUBARA, Monday 2 August 2004 AMObservers: Ronny S., Naomi L., Nina S. (reporting) + a guest colour=red>06:30 — IrtahThe checkpoint opened at 05:45. Labourers went through numerous checkpoint positions, and – according to those who had already gone through – passage was quick. When we arrived, crossing was permitted only at the official checking position, and a queue had already formed. The soldier in charge immediately opened another position, and then the queue dispersed quickly. A bus with families of prisoners and detainees was also waiting in line [this is an Israeli vehicle taking the Palestinian families of those imprisoned in Israeli jails, mostly for terrorist activity, to visit their kinsfolk].07:00 — JubaraThere were no checks at the crossing from Tulkarm to Qalqiliya. Passage from Jubara for residents and workers with permits was unhindered. We saw a car that went across carrying more than five crates, without being delayed!Women from the Jenin area with work-permits were not allowed to cross into Israel. They told us that they had been to Barta’a and had been turned away everywhere . This matter has to be cleared up with the army, so that people from the Jenin area – with permits – can cross into Israel from Irtah gate too. Otherwise they must make a huge detour via Jalama. Traders have the same problem too, we were told. A few minutes later, we left for Beit Iba [see separate report under Nablus section].

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.

    • North of Jenin, on the Green Line between Israel and the West Bank. A big terminal for the passage of Palestinians with permits allowing entrance into Israel and goods into Israel operates there. In the course of 2009 the terminal was opened for the passage of Israeli Arabic citizens into the West Bank. Since October 2009 they may pass in their cars.
