Nuaman
Bethlehem and area: Nuaman, 16.5.06Observers: Yehudit A. and Tamar A (reporting) Shift from 6.30 to 8.15 Only a few workers were sitting at Om Toba next to the path from Nuaman. It seems that most of them were Nuaman residents. Y’ told us that workers with permits and who are above 30 years old, are allowed to enter Jerusalem but they no longer do it through Nuaman, but through CP 300. Y’ also told us that a BP officer came to him and asked him to make a list of the village residents. He asked him what was happening with all the trash and gas tracks that were being brought to Nuaman from the west bank. The officer answered that they would write down their numbers but he couldn’t promise that they would let them in. About the endless problems with the water, Y’ told us that the problem was fixed yesterday, and as for this moment they have running water, that is until the pipe explodes again. The contractor who fixed the pipe the first time did a bad job, he put a new part that wasn’t made of metal, and ever since the pipe keeps exploding. Even today the water flow is so slow that it hardly gets to the last houses in the village. When everything is working Nuaman gets its water from El-H’as, but only for six hours because they have to activate the pump. If the pipe explodes during these six hours and doesn’t get fixed immediately, the residents have to wait for the next day till they have water again. We reached the village when the pupils were heading to their school at El-H’as. Some parents brought their children to school in their cars. In the passage was a BP tank with two BP soldiers in it, and one more soldier standing out side. He sent a man, who came from El- H’as, to the tank to check his id. The man was allowed to pass, and headed to Nuaman. In the exit from Nuaman there is no inspection, they didn’t check the children nor the drivers.
