Abu-Dis, Sawahre 18/2/2004 Watchers: Julia W., Rina H., Maya B., Rahel W. (reporter) There was a border police vehicle and patrol people on one of the side streets between the gas station and the Pishpash gate. It’s the first time we saw border police stationed there. There were about 6 detainees there. At the Pishpash wall, one of the barricades was removed so that people could walk through like human beings rather than climbing over the boulders like goats. There was a border police unit checking people when we arrived and also when we returned about two hours later (5:30), but by the time we got our car about 10 minutes later, the opening was unguarded and people were passing through freely. We met our driver Ahmed on the other side of the Pishpash, and he took us on a tour of several areas where the wall is being built — along the area bordering Jebel Mukhaber and also between A-Tur and Al Ezariya. In the A-Tur/Ezariya wall, there is a small opening which Ahmed told us is to be closed soon. Along the wall were electrical cables. One of his friends “admired” the expertise with which these cables were being laid — deep in the ground and encased in cement. En route to the Container, we visited an orphanage for abandoned Palestinian children which was run by Friends of Lazarus, a Christian group, though the children are Muslim. The director hopes to expand the facility to include a place for battered women. None exists as of now. The director told us that her group has purchased a bakery to help subsidize the orphanage’s expenses and has a dream of a joint group of Jewish and Palestinian women baking bread for peace. We went to the Container where two clearly bored border police were waving through vehicles very quickly. There were occasional random checks, but traffic moved very quickly. There was no back up at all of cars coming from the Bethlehem area.Very quiet, uneventful watch.
