Tarkumiya checkpoint

After crossing the Tarkumya checkpoint to the Palestinian side, we noticed that the parking lot is blocked. Ther is a small number of vehicles in the parking lot, probably of the Palestinians who received a work permit. Very few Palestinians at the checkpoint.

We met Mahmoud from Tarkumiyaf who reports to us that “there is nothing”. Life stopped for them in many ways: money, inability to move, and a sense of uncertainty about the future.

At the checkpoint there is a lively movement of trucks transporting goods to the West Bank and also to Gaza.

Roadblocks on the way to Hebron:

The entrance to Tarkumiya is closed

The entrance to ShuyukhHalhul is closed on both sides.

In addition, we learned of a severe water shortage at the Jaber family. The house is located in oppsite the gas station at the entrance to Kiryat Arba. We provided them with water, food and clothes.

Ali Musmus reports us by phone: They destroyed a four-story house in Qilqis. About 30 people lived in the house. The families were not given a demolition order! and no advance notice.

    • The Tarqumiya Checkpoint is one of the largest and busiest checkpoints where people and goods cross into Israel. It is located on the Separation Barrier close to the Green Line, on Road 35 (connecting Beer Sheva and Hebron). It is run by the Israel Defense Ministry’s Crossings Administration with civilian secuirty companies running the day to day operations. The checkpoint  is indeed open to vehicles in both directions 24/7, but Palestinians are prevented from crossing in vehicles, except in  special cases. MachsomWatch activists visit the checkpoint as it opens at 3:45 am, in order to observe the daily  passage of nearly 10,000 Palestinian workers.  The workers arrive from throughout the Southern West Bank.  Our activists report on the tremendous overcrowding at this checkpoint; they have observed young men climbing and scrambling on the fences and roofs of the ‘access cages’.  This is how the work day begins for those who ‘build the land of Israel’. updated November 2019
