Za’atara Huwwara Beit Furik
Zaatra Huwwara Beit Furik, Monday 11.12.06 AMObservers: Micky F., Ada H. (reporting)07.40 – Barkan – The dirt mound was removed and the road is opened but instead there is a Hummer and 4 soldiers checked the passengers. They say there are “hot” warnings and people aged 16-35 are not allow to cross. There is no car line on either side of the C.P.08.00 – Marda and Zeita – The gates are open. From Marda we can see only pedestrians crossing but from Zeita we see cars coming and going as well.08.10 – Zaatra West – 6 cars in line. 4 soldiers manned the C.P., and 2 lines working. Checking is fast without unnecessary delay. 2 young men are returned because of their age. A driver coming from Tul Karem says all girls from Tul Karem were returned back at Jbara C.P.Zaatra North – 2 lines work properly, the 3rd is working frequently. The M.P. soldier at that stand is checking the cars on the side also. Border Police manned one of the lines and worked very efficiently helping the car lines move faster. A bus driver says he waited since 06.00 at Hawwara C.P. Here he waited half an hour. He is very angry for time lost. One of the passengers was told to get off the bus and turn back. He approached us and said he is from Inabus and he is 34 years old. He has a restaurant in Kafar Ram (?) and need to be there to operate it. Inbal from the MOKED promised to take care of this issue and call back with an answer. In the meantime we asked the B.P. commander, named Booz ( Yes, Yes), who behaved very intelligently at the C.P., and asked him to talk with the C.P. commander, sergeant Eliad. A few minutes later the man was freed to go. Sergeant Eliad is very stiff and guided his soldiers to go by the orders exactly and so they do. 2 young veterinarians were brought off the bus and were told to return back. The female M.P. that deals with them is very rude and stupid. We called the Moked again and Inbal took care so both of them crossed after a short while. Sergeant Eliad says that today all people aged 15-35 including teachers are not allowed to cross.10.40 – Borin Jnc. – On Jit Jnc. Side we see a Hummer and 2 soldiers. No cars.10.50 – Beit Furik – No car line. Only very few pedestrians. A woman with her 3 children wishes to cross to Nablus. The oldest is 14 years old and does not have a birth certificate but he is on his mother’s I.D. First the soldiers refuse to let him cross but after Micky interfered they decided to check if they are real relatives and questioned them. After “ test succeeding” they were all let go. 11.25 – Hawwara – From a distance we saw 8 cars in line waiting to cross. At the small cell ( the one facing Nablus) is a young detainee. He is there for about half an hour. He has no phone with him. At 10.35 another young man was caught and put inside the same cell. The C.P. commander, A., is willing to tell us that they are “ WANTED”. He refuses to tell us the reason for their arrest, neither what will happen to them. Micky tells him that last week the same happened and the man was freed after 4 hours. Sergeant A. answers :” It might be the same!”. On the side stand the detainees’ worried friends. Micky exchanged telephone numbers with them for follow up. ( After a short while the 2nd detainee was freed and the first one around 02.00 PM. 11.50 – Borin Jnc. – The C.P. on the Jit side is working. We saw trucks and 2 cars waiting in line.12.05 – Zaatra North – Empty of cars or pedestrians. Zaatra West – 6 vehicles waiting to cross.12.10 – Zeita and Marda – Gates wide open. No Army.

The Huwwara checkpoint is an internal checkpoint south of the city of Nablus, at the intersection of Roads 60 and 5077 (between the settlements of Bracha and Itamar). This checkpoint was one of the four permanent checkpoints that closed on Nablus (Beit Furik and Awarta checkpoints to the east and the Beit Iba checkpoint to the west). It was a pedestrian-only barrier. As MachsomWatch volunteers, we watched therre since 2001 two shifts a day - morning and noon, the thousands of Palestinians leaving Nablus and waiting for hours in queues to reach anywhere else in the West Bank, from the other side of the checkpoint the destination could only be reached by public transport. In early June 2009, as part of the easing of Palestinian traffic in the West Bank, the checkpoint was opened to vehicular traffic. The passage was free, with occasional military presence in the guard tower. Also, there were vehicle inspections from time to time. Since the massacre on 7.10.2023, the checkpoint has been closed to Palestinians.
On February 26, 2023, about 400 settlers attacked the town's residents for 5 hours and set fire to property, such as houses and cars. Disturbances occurred in response to a shooting of two Jewish residents of Har Bracha by a Palestinian Terrorist. The soldiers stationed in the town did not prevent the arson and rescued Palestinian families from their homes only after they were set on fire. No one was punished and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that "the State of Israel should wipe out Hawara." Left and center organizations organized solidarity demonstrations and support actions for the residents of Hawara.Hawara continued to be in the headlines in all the months that followed: more pogroms by the settlers, attacks by Palestinians and a massive presence of the army in the town. It amounted to a de facto curfew of commerce and life in the center of the city. On October 5, 2023, MK Zvi established a Sukkah in the center of Hawara and hundreds of settlers backed the army blocked the main road and held prayers in the heart of the town all night and the next day. On Saturday, October 7, 23 The "Swords of Iron" war began with an attack by Hamas on settlements surrounding Gaza in the face of a poor presence of the IDF. Much criticism has been made of the withdrawal of military forces from the area surrounding Gaza and their placement in the West Bank, and in the Hawara and Samaria region in particular, as a shield for the settlers who were taking over and rioting.
On November 12, 2023, the first section of the Hawara bypass road intended for Israeli traffic only was opened. In this way, the settlers can bypass the road that goes through the center of Hawara, which is the main artery for traffic from the Nablus area to Ramallah and the south of the West Bank. For the construction of the road, the Civil Administration expropriated 406 dunams of private land belonging to Palestinians from the nearby villages. The settlers are not satisfied with this at the moment, and demand to also travel through Hawara itself in order to demonstrate presence and control.(updated November 2023)

Marda
There are about 2500 inhabitants in the village. A large part of their lands was confiscated for the benefit of the settlement of Ariel, some of whose buildings are adjacent to the village.
They often feel under siege. At both entrances to the village from the main road (505) there are checkpoints and the army does close the yellow arms from time to time. The inhabitants of Marda own olive groves behind a fence. Rarely are they allowed to cultivate their agricultural plots
