When we arrived it looked as though there was no traffic, the road was empty, but when we approached a stream of vehicles from the direction of Bethlehem appeared.  A long line formed and a bus was detained.

Thereafter traffic flowed, more or less, depending on the mood of the soldiers.

Some ten minutes after our arrival the congestion disappeared.  There were many detentions from both directions, most of them brief.
