Story I heard in the corridors, regarding Dr. Ghassan Sharif Haled (Head of Law Department a

el Najah University, Nablus (see reports, Petach Tikva 13.2/20.2.08).

The judge wanted to  release him for lack of proof or any evidence.

He waited for a decision of the prosecutor, who was taking instructions from

‘higher up’to keep him in remand. At this stage there is an appeal to the Military Appeals Court.)

Judge:   Major Itai Regev

Defence attorneys: Advc. Muhamad Aabed, Advc. Nizar Mahajne

Prosecutor: Atef Awida

Stenographer: Corporal Dror Mandola

Interpreter: Sergeant Salman Kassur

13 suspects, of whom three prohibited from meeting a lawyer (I did not manage to record the details of the third).

The lawyers were late and hearings began at 09:55. The three prohibited detaineesinfo-icon were brought in first to the courtroom, and afterwards remained there about seven minutes. The suspect who wasn’t prohibited and the judge waited with a great deal of patience until Advc Mahajne arrived. Advc Aabed only came at 10:10 and left at 10:35. All the hearings ended by 11:10, inclusive of delays in bringing the detainees.

The warders, according to their annoying habit, were ‘knocking’ on the backs of the suspects to speed up their leaving of the courtroom while they were still talking to their lawyers. Despite our many comments on this, neither the lawyers nor the judge do anything to prevent or stop the practice. Everybody apparently is in a hurry to end this day’s work.

As for the prohibited detainees, it is not clear why they are brought before a judge. If the “investigating authority” has issued a prohibition order, the judge has nothing left to do in the matter.
