Bethlehem and surroundings, Nuaman, Tuesday morning, 9.5.2006Observers: Yehudit A. Tamar A. reporting.Natanya translating. 6.15 – 8.15 Olmert’s new fence.A small sign of the easing of the closure. Workers who arrived from the direction of Nuaman are waiting at Um Uuba for their employers. We meet I.who is on his way to work and says that permits have begun to be issued. He tells of troubles. He is worried about the way the border police at El Has is treating the pupils when they are on their way to school. They are already afraid to go to school. On Saturday when they came from at 12.30 the border police used the amplifier of their tank and demanded that the girls dance and afterwards shouted at them “Prostitutes, go away.” The water is still cut off. Yesterday after an interval there was water supply but again the water the water was turned off later. We see that in many places where the water pipe exits from Nuaman there are wet spots because of the burst pipe which have only just begun to dry.At the passage to El Has Olmert’s declaration after the last attack have come true and there is a temporary fence where the permanent wall/fence has not been put up. From the north to the south , to the length of the valley between Nuaman and el Has there is a barbed wire fence with an opening of a few metres before the continuation west and it joins the dividing fence which is parallel to the road leaving Nuaman that is already completed. Next to this is a tank of the border police which perhaps is the same one we saw last week with a punctured tyre but now it is back in full capacity. Next to it and inside are 2 or 3 border police who are not bothering to check very much. A group of pupils pass but after a cursory look at their ids, go on their way. Another woman is not even asked for this. Also cars exiting are not checked.
