Huwwara
Huwwara, Tuesday, August 28, 2007 – PMObservers: Dina P. and Ptachia A. (reporting)Translation: Maureen A.14:10 – The checkpoint is quiet; no pressure.14:30 – A young man is detained. The checkpoint commander refuses to talk to us, but we succeed in talking to the detainee; the reason for detaining him is that the picture in his identity card isn't clear. It's been taken for examination. They let him go after 20 minutes.15:30 – The Beit Furik Checkpoint is almost empty.16:00 - We go back to Huwwara.16:20 - There is a young detainee from Ballata; the reason – he's on the "wanted list". His brother is not detained – waits for him in the hut. The checkpoint commander gives the detainee cigarettes and water and tells us not to worry. They'll take good care of him.16:50 – A young man gets caught in the turnstile. The soldier pushes him and hits him in the head, pulls him out and sends him to the end of the line. The soldiers start to shout at the people who have already come through the checkpoint, but are waiting for their relatives to come through. They push them, yell "Yalla, Ruach!" It's a terrible thing to see. 17:20 – We leave. On our way home we call the detainee; he was set free and is home already.
