Morning

Nearly every day Burhan would call us, missing us. Today we see what we have missed – the colorful, flourishing spring and pleasant coolness of the end of winter. Now the Valley is yellow again, shiningly dry, interspersed with black stains reminiscent of the wild fires that have taken place lately, usually as a result of Israeli army maneuvers. As every June, when the grain is ripening and tall… 3 weeks ago a huge fire destroyed 400 dunams all the way from Tyassir checkpoint to the Kfir army base near Makhoul. The Palestinians say the fire was caused by shells left on the ground in the maneuvers area and blowing up because of the extreme heat.

As we arrived, we found the family radiantly happy.  A few days ago their second daughter got engaged to a nice fellow from Nablus. When she was still a college student, someone asked for her hand but her father refused him before she finished her studies. For two years now, since graduating, she has been sitting at home, unemployed, helping her parents a bit, and volunteering. Perhaps in Nablus she will find employment. Amazing, how love suddenly shines through her face, that is lovely to begin with.

We still sit together outside the encampment, careful not to touch each other, not hug, keep a safe distance. 82-year old Abu Khalaf joined us.  Suddenly we saw thick smoke billowing from the Homsa area. I immediately called the DCO and begged them to send a firetruck. Abu Khalaf asks to ride to the place, he has wheat fields around there and is very concerned. We tried to drive through the settler-colony of Roi, but the (illegal) gate was locked. This gate and another one, north of Roi (also locked) block passage of 13 families from Al Hadidiya to the main road and to all of their life needs. We had no other choice but to turn back to the road and reached the site through the vineyards of settler-colony Beqa’ot.  It’s a long drive and the red dust hardly lets one see through it. We found Abu Khalaf’s wheat field, some of it harvested, some not – the fire did not reach it. We continued eastward towards the smoke. The north-western part of Homsa, nearly up to the residents’ encampment, wheat fields were going up in flames. Youngsters ran into the fire and beat it with wet sacks. Old Omar, too, whose fields were on fire, ran with a sack to put it out. One firetruck came, sent by the Palestinian Authority. We saw trampled wheat stalks in the heart of the fields, attesting to the tanks that galloped here, and that the fire was the handiwork of the occupation forces. Residents said they heard shells being shot a moment before the fire broke out. 50 dunams up in smoke.

Following harsh drought years, finally a very rainy winter arrived and the Valley’s Palestinian farmers could breathe for a moment. Then comes June with its heatwaves and winds, and the Israeli army lights the spark that destroys their crops. Can it not simply refrain from firing for a single month, until the farmers harvest their fields? Why can the army not consider the Palestinian farmers the way it manages to avoid harming the settler-colonist fields? And why do the Israeli army and the settler-colonists not help Palestinians put out these fires??
