A shift to Sh’aab al-Butum, Mesafer Yatta

Many times, our shifts in the South Hebron Hills are determined according to the current events in the area and the information that flows to us from there.

This time too, we are on our way to Sha'ab al-Butum, a village that suffers from the settlers of the outposts around them constantly. We learned of a woman named Wadha Najjar and her nephew, who had received severe blows to the head and suffers from skull fractures.

And Wadha is with Ishak Jabarin, our friend, and other families, in a meeting with representatives of the YMCA organization from Bethlehem.

We picked her up and drove to her house. She lives with her extended family in Sha'ab al-Butum, south of the part we usually visit.

The event was about 3 weeks ago, but it started a few days earlier, and this is what she tells us:

Wadha and her niece saw a settler from Mitzpe Yair (a nearby settlement from where violent and well-known settlers come out), entering with his herd into the pasture of H. When she saw this, she warned him and asked him to leave. At the same time, she called the Kiryat Arba police to report this.

The settler who was invading with his flock was angry, and as revenge came with about ten more of his friends, accompanied by soldiers, on the pretext that sheep were stolen from their flocks (a pretext known from other events throughout the region).

Wadha and her brother, Anan, were in the house.

When she ordered them to leave, they mercilessly attacked her and Anan with clubs and fractured her skull. Volunteers and activists in the area took her and Anan to A-Tuwani and from there an ambulance drove them to the hospital in Yatta. She underwent tests, was hospitalized for one day and returned to her home.

I am also attaching photos published by activists who documented the event.

And Wadha still suffers from headaches and the trauma of the violence she suffered.

We wish her recovery and health.

This is the occupation.
