5:55 a.m. – Barta’a-Reihan Checkpoint on the (Israeli) seam-line zone side

Numerous vehicles await Palestinian workers. People emerge from the fenced-in track we call the “Net sleeve info-icon ”, from the terminal to the car park. They aren’t numerous, some stop at the sleeve for a cup of coffee and pastry at the Hermesh settler-colonist’s snack bar. There are four inspection posts open inside the terminal, enough for the number of people crossing at this time. Most of the workers are young. We try to inquire where they work. Some are employed in Barta’a, others in the construction sites of the new city of Hareesh. We don’t know what criteria are used for issuing permits for Hareesh workers at Barta’a Checkpoint. Sometimes many would return through Barta’a in the afternoon and complained that in the morning they are forced to cross at the more distant checkpoint.

6:30 Aneen Checkpoint

Vehicles of the Military Police (that operates this checkpoint) and the DCO (that issues the crossing permits) arrive immediately after us. The gate towards the seam-line zone is open, and the soldiers open the other two gates info-icon . The farmers, whose village has been separated from their own olive groves by the Separation Fence, wait near the middle gate. The people approach a small shed, five at a time. The first goes through at 6:40 a.m. The inspection is quick and seems to be conducted quietly this morning. About 30 men cross, one woman and two tractors. One of the people going through, whose son was arrested as an illegal alien in Israel a few weeks ago, tells us that his son was in custody for three days and then released. Now the son works in Jenin city, and earns about 80-100 shekels a day. A pittance.

The sunrise above Aneen Checkpoint is glorious. The yellow sign posted on the checkpoint gate is entirely erased (see photo). One needs to know or guess its opening times.

7:05 a.m. Tayube-Roumana Checkpoint

The soldiers who ride from Aneen CP to the Tayibe-Roumana one via the security road along the Separation Fence get there before us, as we drive through the alleys of Umm Al Fahm. This morning about 20 people are crossing, one woman and three tractors. Crossing is swift and the soldiers maintain their relaxed mode. Which does not change the fact that the Separation Fence here, as in dozens of other places, separates the farmers’ homes from their lands. Here, as in Aneen, the checkpoint gates are opened only twice a week for a short time (10-20 minutes) in the morning and in the afternoon.

7:15 a.m. – we leave, see the tractors turning into the olive tree groves at the foothills of Umm Al Fahm.

מכוניות רבות ממתינות לעובדים. אנשים עולים בשביל המגודר, שאנו מכנות 'שרוול info-icon רשת', מהטרמינל למגרש החנייה. זרם העולים דליל, אחדים עוצרים בשרוול לקפה ומאפה במזנון של המתנחל מחרמש. בטרמינל פתוחות ארבע עמדות בידוק, מספיק למספר העוברים בשעה זו. רוב העוברים צעירים, אנחנו מנסות לברר איפה עובדים. יש העובדים בברטעה ואחרים בבניין העיר חריש. איננו יודעות מה הקריטריונים למתן היתר מעבר במחסום ברטעה לעובדי חריש הקרובה. היו פעמים שרבים, החוזרים דרך ברטעה אחה''צ, התלוננו שנאלצים לעבור בבוקר במחסומים מרוחקים.

06:30 מחסום עאנין

רכבי המשטרה הצבאית (המתפעלת את המחסום) והמת''ק (מנהלת תאום וקישור, המנפיקה את אישורי המעבר) מגיעים מייד אחרינו. השער לכיוון מרחב התפר פתוח והחיילים פותחים את שני השערים הנוספים. החקלאים, שגדר ההפרדה נתקה את כרמי הזיתים שלהם מכפרם, ממתינים ליד השער האמצעי. האנשים ניגשים בחמישיות לסככה קטנה. ראשון עובר ב 06:40. הבידוק מהיר ונראה שמתנהל הבוקר בניחותא. עוברים כשלושים איש, אישה אחת ושני טרקטורים. אחד העוברים, שבנו נעצר לפני שבועות אחדים כשב''ח (שוהה בלתי חוקי בישראל) מספר שבנו שהה שלושה ימים במעצר ושוחרר. כעת הבן עובד בג'נין ושכרו כ 80-100 ש''ח ליום. מעט מאוד.

זריחת השמש מעל מחסום עאנין יפהפייה. השלט הצהוב על שער המחסום מחוק לגמרי (תמונה). את שעות הפתיחה והסגירה צריך לדעת או לנחש.

07:05 מחסום טייבה-רומנה

החיילים, שנוסעים ממחסום עאנין למחסום טייבה רומנה דרך כביש המערכת שמלווה את גדר ההפרדה, מקדימים אותנו, הנוסעות דרך סמטאות אום אל פחם.. עוברים כאן הבוקר כעשרים איש, אישה אחת ושלושה טרקטורים. המעבר מהיר והחיילים ממשיכים בהתנהלות נינוחה, כפי שנהגו במחסום עאנין. התנהגות החיילים אינה יכולה לשנות את העובדה שגדר ההפרדה חוצצת כאן, כמו בעשרות מקומות אחרים, בין בתי חקלאים לבין אדמתם. כאן, כמו בעאנין, שערי המחסום נפתחים רק פעמיים בשבוע, לזמן קצר (10-20 דקות) בבוקר ואחרי הצהריים.

07:15 אנחנו עוזבות, רואות את הטרקטורים פונים לכרמי הזיתים שלמרגלות אום אל פחם.

located on the Separation Fence east of the Israeli community Mei Ami and close to the village of Anin in the West Bank. It is opened twice a week, morning and afternoon, for periods of time that are growing shorter Lith time. It is meant for Anin farmers whose olive groves have been separated from the village by the fence. Transit permits are only issued to those who can produce ownership documents for their caged-in land, and sometimes only to the head of the family or his widow, eldest son and children. At times the inheritors lose their right to tend to the family’s land. The permits are eked out and are re-issued only with difficulty. 55-year old persons may cross the checkpoint (into Israel) without special permits. During the olive harvest season (about one month around October) the checkpoint is open every day and more transit permits are issued. Names of persons eligible to cross are held in the soldiers’ computers. In July 2007, a sweeping instruction was issued according to which whoever does not return to the village through this checkpoint in the afternoon will be stripped of his transit permit when he shows up there next time. Since 2019, the checkpoint has not been allways locked with the seam-line zone gate (1 of 3 gates info-icon ), and the fence around it has been broken in several sites.

Tayba-Rummana'

Tayba-Rummana is an agricultural checkpoint. It is located in the separation fence in front of the eastern slopes of the Israeli city of Umm al-Fahm.
The Palestinian villages next to the checkpoint are Khirbet Tayba and Rummana. Dozens of dunams of olive groves were removed from their owners, the residents of these villages on the western side of the separation fence.

Barta’a-Reihan Checkpoint

This checkpoint is located on the Separation Fence route, east of the Palestinian town of East Barta’a. The latter is the largest Palestinian community inside the seam-line zone (Barta’a Enclave) in the northern West Bank. Western Barta’a, inside Israel, is adjacent to it. The Checkpoint is open all week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Since mid-May 2007, the checkpoint has been managed by a civilian security company subordinate to the Ministry of Defense. People permitted to cross through this checkpoint into and from the West Bank are residents of Palestinian communities inside the Barta’a Enclave as well as West Bank Palestinian residents holding transit permit. Jewish settlers from Hermesh and Mevo Dotan cross here without inspection. A large, modern terminal is active here with 8 windows for document inspection and biometric tests (eyes and fingerprints). Usually only one or two of the 8 windows are in operation. Goods, up to medium commercial size, may pass here from the West Bank into the Barta’a Enclave. A permanent registered group of drives who have been approved by the may pass with farm produce. When the administration of the checkpoint was turned over to a civilian security firm, the Ya’abad-Mevo Dotan Junction became a permanent checkpoint. . It is manned by soldiers who sit in the watchtower and come down at random to inspect vehicles and passengers (February 2020).
