Morning

06:05 – Barta'a Reihan Checkpoint

Many workers are crowded in the upper parking lot sitting on the curb and waiting for their rides after crossing through the checkpoint.  We walked down to the Palestinian

parking lot.  There is usually a long line on Sundays but today the line is short and people are entering the turnstile after only seven minutes.   Large numbers of people enter the terminal after a short wait.   No one is complaining this morning.  Most of the people are working in construction building the settlement of Harish.  They are pleased to have work.  Trucks are waiting for the inspection facility to open at 08:00.  Refrigerated trucks are not permitted to cross.   We buy coffee from A. who is parked with his motorbike near the line.

06:36 – Tura – Shaked Checkpoint

When we arrived the soldiers had not gotten to the checkpoint and we wandered freely through the open checkpoint.  About 50 people were waiting for the checkpoint to open on the Palestinian side.  The soldiers arrived at 06:45 and we asked why they were 15 minutes late.  Do they think that the Palestinians' time is not valuable?  To our surprise the commander answered, "You're right, we were late.  We'll let everyone cross quickly without being checked."   People crossed quickly and commended the soldiers' attitude.  Several vehicles crossed quickly from one side to the other.

Today is the first day of school.  Children from the village of Dahar al Malakh, excited and dressed up for school, hurry to the school in the village of Tura on the other side of the fence.  A friend of ours who told us that he was not permitted to bring cooked food through the checkpoint from party venues in Um Al Fahem to needy people in Tura is waiting for his ride to work.  Meanwhile he gave us some details about an incident at this checkpoint in which a Palestinian woman slapped a woman soldier at this checkpoint and is now awaiting trial.

At 07:20 it appeared that everyone had crossed and we left.
