Morning
At 6.45, 4 Border Police were checking two transits at the traffic roundabout at the entrance to Abu Dis, but we continued first to the wall crossing. Few people, adults, were passing at that time fairly freely until the B.P. in charge suddenly announced there was a closure – at which point some people were turned back. Suddenly the “organizer” of the transits summoned us, complaining about the BP at the roundabout, so we quickly drove back there. By then there were no vehicles there but the 4 BP were making their way on foot towards the wall crossing, checking transits on the way and sending those with the wrong ID’s back home. One of them claimed he was a doctor at Hadassah. But he walked so quickly back to Abu Dis that we couln’t catch up with him to help. The four BP’s were a particularly rude and brutal lot, cursing old women. They even started roughing up (physically) the transit organizer, Ramadan. Back at the wall, traffic was now heavy, with many schoolchildren and students crossing in both directions. This seemed to be the only crossing-point. The BPs (both our original four and others who were manning the crossing) were rude to the pedestrians – and unfriendly to us, demanding and writing down our names. On the other hand, they refused to identify themselves.
