South Hebron, Wednesday 22.6.05, AM Observers: Didi and shenunitabsolutely ordinary mornung, which because of its routine it rased a few wonders about the absurd of the situation. generally – very heavy trafficDaharia – the gate is closed, a military hammer stood there, the soldiers inside, no people trespassingDura al fawar – at the beginning the gate open, not much people going by, on our way back, a soldier stood there letting people and cars go through, there was no line or holding upShaych Sair – the junction is empty of peopleSair – the entrance to hebron with heavy traffic of taxies and carsThe Humanitarian Barrier – hammer stood there a few minutes, looked like he was waiting and then leftAnd with all that, we saw some farmers on donkeys with their agricultural product in in boxes , and “fruits of israel” written on them. also an absurdAnd some questions about the palestinians lisence plates – if there’s no palestinian state who is giving the plates? us? and if so, why? to differentiate between jewish and palestinian car? or maybe to keep controling the so called civil life of the palestians

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.

      Checkpoints observed in H2:

      1. Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
      2. Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
      3. The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
