Bethlehem and area, Monday, 5th December, P.M.Observers: Talia A-S, Judy O (reporting)DCL, Ezyon3.30 p.m. about seven people waiting. Several people with magnetic cards had been refused permits by GSS without any reason given. This seems to be a recurring phenomenon. For example, one man who had worked for several years for UNRA in Jerusalem and wanted to return after a break was refused despite his magnetic card; another had returned from Chile, had a Chilean passport and magnetic card and wanting a permit to look for work in Israel was also refused by GSS. We gave their names to Sylvia who was to write a letter on their behalf and try and find out the reason. Another young man was told he first had to pay all his traffic fines at Ras el Amud but he was refused the permit he needed to get there. There were also three young men who had been called by the GSS for interrogation – they had been waiting their turn since 9.00 in the morning. One told us that he had been called several times before and each time at the end of the day had been told to go home without being questioned and to come again. He was a student who was missing exams. When we asked if, at the university, his absence for this reason, was taken into consideration, he told us that he was afraid to actually tell the teacher where he had been in case it aroused suspicion. Al-Khadr 4.45 p.m. The usual crowds and confusion – no military presence.Ezyon CP – traffic flowed smoothely, no detainees.CP 300 In the terminal pedestrians passed through smoothly. We were stopped on the road around to the side gate near Rachel’s Tomb – the soldiers said it was forbidden even though there is no sign indicating that this is so.At the place of the old CP there were jeeps and soldiers but no checking and no military presence anywhere else along that stretch of road to the new CP.
