Qalandiya (only), Tuesday, 18.4.06, PMObservers: Uta R. (guest), Roni H. (reporting) The new road connecting 443 with Qalandiya is completed and open.As reported, the checkpoint has been taken over by the border police and when I inquired at the car passing station about the regulations of today, I was contemptuously complemented out of the area without being honored with any answer. There are new traffic arrangements at the checkpoint for the buses leaving to Jerusalem. They park now right next to the exit (or entrance) of the checking area and thus save the passengers a 200m walk. On the other hand passengers coming from Ramallah or from anywhere north, have to leave the bus, pass through the pedestrians’ checking – today, for example, the checking took “only” 35 minutes – and then mount a bus again. Their journey is cut into two and in addition to the waiting for the checking, they have to wait twice for the bus to fill up. One day after the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv and less people than usual are on the road. But in accordance to the slogan “keep the population in a state of constant uncertainty” there was an unexpected liberalization of the rule that only the driver could pass through the car checking area. Today (from 15:00 -17:00 at least) also the co-passengers could stay in the car. The bypass road of the checkpoint for West Bank residents to Ramallah was open and traffic was sparse. In keeping with our claim that no checkpoint is invincible and that every wall can be overcome, some residents of Ar-Ram found a rather comfortable way to slip over unnoticed through the fortified fence to the Jerusalem side and back!
