Jerusalem
Zeitim CPTuesday, 22.08.2006, AMObservers: Hannah A., Michaela R (reporter) Zeitim CP: 06:20 – Immediately after we arrived, a second lane was opened for checking. People assemble in front of both the external and internal turnstiles. It is difficult to say exactly how many people, but one could say that there were tens at any given moment. Two Border Police arrive and “make order” in the queue for the external turnstile. They push everyone back and crowd the women into one queue with the men. Later we see that the men make way for the women so that they do not need to stand in the queue.A woman soldier speaks over the loudspeaker with a didactic voice. The loudspeaker screams and it is difficult to understand. Waiting time: about 15 minutes. When we thought about leaving for the next checkpoint – we noticed people who called us from the other side of the fence. It seems that for people from the Bethlehem area, with new permits from yesterday, were not let across (a few crossed. So that families were separated, and work crews were split up).We started with a series of phone calls. The Border Police in Jerusalem said that they would check. It seems that they had not yet finished their in-depth checking since we did not hear from them again. In the Jerusalem wraparound we were passed from one to another, and were rebuked (by A.) who has too much work and we should look for the commander of the checkpoint and it is not at all in his jurisdiction. But he was not prepared to tell us who the commander of the checkpoint was. The only one who was prepared to listen and help was A. from the commander of Abu-Dis. With his help the people from Bethlehem crossed, but with quite a delay.
