Zeitim CP, The Container, Abu-Dis, Sheikh SaedMonday, 06.10.‏‏2006, AMObservers: Edna P., Anat T. (reporter)Zeitim CP:06:45 – we drove through Augusta Victoria, and then turn down leftward (eastward) to Zeitim CP through the neighborhood. It was stinking all the way, the stench of uncollected garbage. What happens to the municipality of Jerusalem? Isn’t the wall enough? There is no need for barricades of garbage on the way to golden Jerusalem…There are no lines in Zeitim CP today. There is a humanitarian line for pupils. The transportation ushers also can’t explain the fluctuations in the numbers of people here from day to day, month to month. They claim that in The Container they don’t send people here, and this is why it is empty (but later on we find out that this is not the reason, since there is no much traffic over there too. The Container: 07:30 – It is the second week that the gate going down to Al-Ezariya through the wadi is open. The documents of three taxis are being checked – a matter of about twenty minutes. There is no long line for cars. We find two detainees. We were told that they have been there for about fifteen minutes, and their documents are being checked, and they will be released later on. The taxis are going on their way. 08:00 – on the way back we wonder again about the fact that it is the second week that on the way out from Al-Ezariya to Jerusalem there is no road-block. Good. The drive is very slow near the tunnel. This is no new thing either. At 08:20 we reach the Pishpash. We have bad memories from last week. Then we found two boys detained there and the soldiers behaved rudely to them. It may be that this is why we are not especially nice to the soldiers who are watching one detainee. Two of them were here last week. I know the face of the detainee, he is one of the workers who tried, and have been trying to pass everyday in order to work a little. The soldiers tell us that he has been here for two and a half hours, and they are allowed to keep him for three hours, but the officer will be here soon. A short argument about the security needs and basic compassion follows. The soldiers are angry at us. The officer comes and explains politely that the man had dug a tunnel under the fence, ran away and lied. Well, what else is new… but this is very serious by the law, and it is clear to us that he will be arrested and investigated and we can not interfere.Sheikh Saed: 09:00 – Two smiling nice soldiers between barbed wire fences and an ugly wall. They also think that there is a problem in closing the small neighborhood by fence, and they are afraid of a permanent checking point being put there. Today they let mothers and children pass in order to get inoculations, and they try to help. It is so good to meet them after the hostility we saw in the deserted Pishpash.
