Bethlehem and vicinity, Tuesday 19/06/07, PMObservers: Shulamit, Zipi A (reporting) 14:15- The tunnel checkpoint- Traffic was flowing. When passing we saw a Jeep parked by El Khader, it was still standing there when we were on our way back. 14:30- DCL Ezyon- The waiting hall at the DCL was deserted. At the parking lot we found some taxi drivers. A woman from Hebron came to us and presented us with her case, with the aid of one of the taxi drivers who acted as a translator. Her son was supposed to get released from the Israeli prison. She showed us a voucher for 1000 Shekels that had a signature from the Postal Bank, she had to pay the money for the court expenses for his release. On that morning her son called and said they wouldn’t let him out because they didn’t get the payment for the court. The taxi driver advised her to talk to a lawyer. At the parking lot were only a few people, most of them were waiting for cab to take them back home to Hebron. 15:15- El Nashnash- Traffic was flowing. 15:30- We headed back to Jerusalem.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
