Bethlehem CP and Ezyon DCL
Bethlehem area, Wednesday PM, 8.8.07Observers: TB, MBH (reporting)Bethlehem CP: We passed there both at the start and at the end of ourshift. Both times there were no queues, and people passed quickly.Ezyon DCL, 15:30. A single vehicle in the parking lot. A Palestinianwoman approaches us in anguish: she needs to go to Haddasah the nextday, and though she has been at the DCL since 2pm, they tell her the DCLis closed. “Why closed already?”, we ask the soldier at the turnstilewindow. “We had to close because there was such a load”. Load? Load?In the 70 minutes we were there, exactly 7 people passed through the DCL(and none were inside when we arrived). The soldier relents and allowsthe woman in (4 minutes later, she emerged with the desired permit), but”only the woman!”, he admonishes. As to ourselves , we were ordered outof the waiting shed in the following words: “All Israelis — out”. Infact, we didn’t go out, and everyone who came to the DCL got in, and thesoldier’s answers seemed to reflect only his own agenda. As you know by now, requests for work permits are now handled though thePalestinian DCL in Bethlehem. But where do Israeli employers, those whowant workers, go to present their documents? If they are from Jerusalem, the Israeli employers work through the DCL in Beit El. However, if theyare from Gush Ezyon, they need to go to Linda at th Ezyon DCL, dailybetween 8 am and 1pm.
