Beit Iba
Beit Iba, Tuesday 4.9.07 AMObservers: Ruti C, Elinoar B (Reporting) Jit junction is unmanned. Beit Iba – dirt, dust, demolition works. Dull routine, no obvious cruelty but indifference and haughtiness. 07:30-09:00The vehicle line is not too long, yet the checking on the exit side is slow and it takes about an hour to get out.At the pedestrian checkpoint that is being demolished, on the entrance side to Nablus, only a concrete raised path is left of the old checkpoint. The men stand on it, the women shffle in the dust, but pass without checking. Every few minutes the men are ordered sulkily not to cross the line, not even the toe of their shoe. The line is a crack between the conrete plates, no one can guess its function as a borderline. The notorious “Irjah lawara!” [move back!] is the order of the day.All the soldiers, including the woman inside the booth, gather to inspect an ID. They can’t decide if the photo in the ID matches the young boy carrying it. Meanwhile he is told to wait in the enclosure, and the soldier brings him some water. Eventually he is released.A youngish man wearing a traditional gallabieh, a headdress and a long beard is obviously a suspect. He is checked thoroughly, patted in search of hidden weapons.A young woman with a girl who looks like her young sister, who carries a birth certificate, is not allowed to enter Nablus. This is an old edict, children must be accompanied by a parent. The connection to security is quite unclear. On the exit side only few people pass, but they are checked thoroughly. A small DVD is dismantled, personal belongings are spilled on the table. And all this time three guns are pointing at the people.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
