Bethlehem and surroundings, Nuaman, Tuesday morning, 14.2.2006Observers: Yehudiet A. Ilit R. Roni P. Tamar A. (reporting)Natanya translating. 6.15 to 8.15On the way we meets 10s of Palestinians on their way to work, much more than we have seen in the last weeks.A rolling checkpoint at Mazmariyah. Next to the fence we see what the reason is for this. No jeep and free passage. It seems that nearly everyone wanting to pass has done so. We see only a few people leaving Nuaman for the West Bank . After a few minutes a jeep arrives to find out how we are but leaves at once. At the fence there are changes. On the road leaving Nuaman which the army made lines have been pained in white and yellow and on the side of the road also a white continuous line in the middle so that the two or three cars which pass there in the next 15 minutes should not overtake one another. The fence itself in the passage to El Has is no longer there. Only iron bars and between them two yellow doors hanging in the air and leading nowhere. The security guard whom we have met once before explains. “They made a mistake.” They did not estimate correctly the width of the road next to the fence and so they have had to take down the fence so as to widen the road. The work to the north has started. There is a building site with a small hut and a bulldozer and tractor which are busy working. It seems the road turns to the east and that way at least the olive orchards between Nuaman and Zur Bachar will be spared .
