Abu Dis and environsMonday, 6.3.06 PM Noa Y., Judy O., (reporting)Abu Dis 14:50A feeling of desolation. We went up to the pishpash. There were three soldiers – one next to the wall, standing on the stones used to climb over to the other side. From time to time he would move to let those he allowed, to pass. Those who were going east were all able to pass. One of the soldiers stopped the people who were crossing through the monastery grounds and the third soldier was stopping any others. Actually, it is forbidden to cross over anywhere here – one has to go back and go through only at the new “Zeitim” checkpoint. We spoke to the soldier in charge, who was polite, and said that he has been explaining to everyone that from tomorrow the crossing is only via the new checkpoint. The soldiers did make a few exceptions. When the soldier at the wall didn’t allow a few people with blue IDs to pass we spoke again to the soldier in charge – and he allowed them through.A young women who had crossed over in the morning was looking for her ID. It became apparent that soldier G. (took the ID from her in the morning and disappeared. Now a soldier tried to find out where the ID was and took her telephone number. She didn’t want to wait and left. The taxi drivers showed us cameras on the exterior walls of the monastery. They claimed that that is how the commanders see what is happening – who jumps over the wall – and then report to the soldiers on the spot. One of the drivers tried – passed through the gate and jumped from the wall, and they saw that it worked – he jumped at a place that the soldiers couldn’t see and this was reported on their phones.A short time later Eli Gabai arrived. He claimed that the whole population had received flyers informing them that the crossing could only be made at the new checkpoint. He added that there would be another checkpoint, (now being built), further along the wall, past the hotel. There would also be a crossing for religious purposes at the Lazarus Monastry. (How do they know who passes for religious reasons?) Zeitim Checkpoint Only very few people were anywhere to be seen. All in all very few people crossing both here and at the pishpash. We asked ourselves – where have all the people disappeared? Where do they cross over?ContainerNo detainees. Traffic flows. The workers arrive and cross over without problems. So it is not clear where they came from.
