Bethlehem, El Nashash, EzyonSunday, June 25 AMObservers: Sylvia P, Ofra B, Chana A (reporting)6:50 Bethlehem CP: Most of the workers crossing over were already outside. This was a good morning for those with permits: four booths were open on the Israeli side, we heard no shouting on the other end. According to Palestinian workers we asked, the CP opened at 5:30 that morning. This was confirmed by the commanding officer we met inside. Although the terminal is supposed to open at 5:00, there had been “problems” that morning and it was opened half an hour later. He didnt even attempt to ban us from inside the terminal.7:30 El Nashash: Lots of taxis coming and going. Nothing unusual. Some petitioners came up to us and we wrote requests for them.8:30 Ezyon DCL: Hot! Everyone tries to find a shady corner. The covered shed is even hotter than the outside although the fans were turned on. The movement inside was very very slow. At 9:45 we were told there had only been three magnetic cards issued. Sylvia called to complain about that. We met some physically disabled men: One, who heads a home for disabled, wanted to get an entry permit to visit one of his fellow residents who is in Hadassa with cancer. He had terrible problems and no phone calls on our part helped. He was sent back to bring the sick man’s ID number. Another man, a victim of polio, married and with children, has not been able to get a magnetic cards for four years. He had been told to write a letter begging for mercy. We wrote it for him, but he called afterwards to say it got him nowhere. One of our clients whose “security risk” blot had been removed in April, came to claim his magnetic card only to discover that on May 29 the security risk had been reinstated for him. No card. What a hassle the authorities give everyone.
