South Hebron 3/5/2004 Watchers: Yael Z., Nomi S. (reporting), 2 students who are doing a paper on the group We left Shoket at 6:30. At the Dura–El Fawar crossing there were no soldiers. The crossing is still closed to vehicles. There were lots of pedestrians crossing in both directions and the yellow taxis waited on each side. At 7:05 we arrived at the Sheep’s crossing between Yata and Hebron. On the Hebron side there was a Hummer. Two soldiers checked the IDs of the young men. They didn’t wait for more than a minute or two. There were no detainees. The pedestrian traffic was busy, especially in the direction from Yata to Hebron. Cars enter the crossing at great speed and honk their horns to warn the pedestrians. They don’t slow down. There is, of course, no pedestrian crossing marked there. We decided to leave after about 20 minutes. A sergeant approached us in order to explain to us the uselessness of our presence. He suggested that there were better ways to help the Palestinians. On our way back, a bit after Dura, near the village Karmar, a driver of a small truck was caught on the road by some soldiers. He had broken through a dirt blockage. He was forced to position his truck on the top of the dirt mound to block others and the key to his truck was taken. We returned to Shoket at 8:00.

    • According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
