Bethlehem 8/5/2004 Watchers: Ada G., Dalia R. Haya A. Meira L. Bethlehem, CP 300, 7:00. Completely empty. Ada and Dalia approached the BP officers and were driven away rudely. I tried to get their ID numbers, but their tags were folded. David explained: “I don’t have to show my identity to anybody. They might claim later that David beat them”. Bet Jalla, 7:30. Hardly any people, except for a few taxi drivers waiting on the other side. El Khader (by Hussan). A few buses and many cabs with a lot of people crossing. No closure. Three Nahal soldiers with drawn rifles walking around. One of them called us “traitors who give comfort to the enemy”. Halhul CP near Karmei-Tzur settlement. For many months this crossing has been deserted, but now there’s brisk traffic of buses, taxis and passengers. It turns out that the entrance to Hebron via Nebi-Yunis is closed and so is the Bridge Checkpoint from Halhul to Hebron. Many drivers complained of the difficulties encountered when they try to pay traffic violations, not to mention the exorbitant fines (750 shekels for stopping on the shoulders of the road where there are no designated parking spaces).

According to Wye Plantation Accords (1997), Hebron is divided in two: H1 is under Palestinian Authority control, H2 is under Israeli control. In Hebron there are 170,000 Palestinian citizens, 60,000 of them in H2. Between the two areas are permanent checkpoints, manned at all hours, preventing Palestinian movement between them and controlling passage of permit holders such as teachers and schoolchildren. Some 800 Jews live in Avraham Avinu Quarter and Tel Rumeida, on Givat HaAvot and in the wholesale market.
Checkpoints observed in H2:
- Bet Hameriva CP- manned with a pillbox
- Kapisha quarter CP (the northern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- The 160 turn CP (the southern side of Zion axis) - manned with a pillbox
- Avraham Avinu quarter - watch station
- The pharmacy CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
- Tarpat (1929) CP - checking inside a caravan with a magnometer
- Tel Rumeida CP - guarding station
