Anata, Abu-Dis Tuesday morning, 2 March 2004 Watchers: Michael R., Ora K., Yael L-J (reporter) Guests: Ram Rahat with Canadian filmmaker Jackes Silberman and two Israeli film people Anata: Regularly moving car traffic to Jerusalem. Only very few controls. 4 Border Policemen on duty. One was checking the papers of pedestrians on their way to the city. He was nice, was offering us water. His collegues on the other side of the street under a shelter were arguing with one of six detainees with expansive gestures. When they realized that there was a camera team present, they released all the detainees. From now on they were checking the pedestrians faster. Abu-Dis, the Pishpash gate : Two Border Policemen, one checking the papers of the waiting Palestinians on their way to Jerusalem. He was inconsistent, operating according to various methods. First he was telling them: “Only patients with appointments to see doctors and hospitals. Nobody else.” Then he was stopping people with the remark “Seger” [closure in effect]. They seemed having documents not valid in closure. With an old Bedouin women with heavy loads on her head, he was arguing back and forth, because she had no ID. Under the softening influence of Michela and Ora he let her pass. While he was discussing her case, some people climbed the stones at the right side of the wall. After holding back several people because of “closure,” he and his collegues left the place with a jeep, perhaps for breakfast. From now on everybody could pass without any control. Abu-Dis, the hotel: We were driving to the hotel. The street was quiet, nobody around. At the entrance to the hotel grounds stood one truck. Incidentally, this and all the estate around were empty… The building of the Wall is proceeding.
