Around Hebron
Hebron Hills and Beith-Awaa, Monday 8.8.2005, MorningObservers: Haya N., Hagit B., (reporting) Sandi – a Palestinian guest from Beit-Sahur. Time: 07:00 – 11:30As we left, before Sansana roadblock, on road 60, we saw 4 soldiers with cocked rifles. There were no Palestinians, because of the continuation of the closure. Sansana Roadblock: No people waiting to cross (closure). The work on the construction of the fence goes on. Palestinian workers work at the construction and they are brought by yellow taxis. Samoa – Dahariyya: Blocked.Karame: The gate is open.Dura el_Pawar: The pillbox manned and the barrels stick out from the slots. Scarcely any traffic. Beit-Hagay Roadblock: The settler’ tent is still on its spot. Students of Hebron University are on their way to the summer semester studies. Taxis from both sides of the road wait for clients. Little children pick up empty conserve cans. People cross the 500 meters carrying heavy load. The gate is closed.Shiuch-Sair: Almost no traffic. Taxis park from both sides.Halhul – East: The pillbox is manned. The traffic flows freely. We drove to El-Hadr to pick up Sandi. The Humanitarian CP: The pillbox manned. No traffic. A hummer with reservists came over to us.Halhul Bridge: The pillbox manned.Idna: The soldiers came down from the pillbox to set a rolling roadblock. On our return it was already lifted. Zif Junction: The gate was open.Susia roadblock: Manned. No traffic.Kongo roadblock: Manned. No traffic. In general: Very little traffic on the road, including military vehicles. All the barriers are in place. No changes.Beit Awaa: The Beit-Ivva roadblock is on road 358, by the turn to Idna toward Dahriyya, on the western ridge of the Hebron hills. At Idna we met with Mr. M”S, an advocate of Beit-Ivva municipality who is working now in cooperation with the Ass. for Civil Rights in Israel on a legal plea to lift the block. There are no settlers in this area apart from 13 families that reside in Negohot Aleph and in the enclave of Negohot B. Because of this settlement 110,000 residents of the area are deprived of free movement to Davriyya. M”S took us to the place where, after a long battle and efforts of many people, the roadblock toward Dura has been lifted. Now people can move on an asphalt road instead of using dirt by-paths. Two Palestinian families that live near the road that leads to the enclave, have no permits for passing through the roadblock and The Red Cross has to bring them basic supplies. M”S told us further of the many difficulties they face with lack of water and a meager supply of electricity. Mekoroth does not allocate enough water: “The priorities of the Israelis is to the crops of cotton rather than to the people.” The pipe arrives till the road. The well contains 300 cubic meters. Tankers bring the water from the well to the houses. Now, the well has been empty for a few days. Oxfam, a British company, tries to build an infrastructure for water supply in the village. The fence on the western side of the village stands already. The olive trees that have been uprooted for this purpose have been planted anew, but their future seems dubious, for there is not enough growth space between the trees. The fence is quite near the green line. The route of the fence cuts 800 meters east into the West Bank. It seems not only unjust but also not logical from the economical perspective, because a fence existed already, right on the green line, in the Wadi. Now, by the cemetery the fence is a big concrete structure and by the side of the school it looks the same as the one in Jerusalem.M”S relates further, that once there was a District and Coordination Office in Idna. Now the DCO in Hebron has to attend to half a million residents of the area. The conditions are extremely difficult. To end in an optimistic atmosphere he says that vehicles are now allowed to move freely on route 35.I hope that the pictures that we photographed, will help the Supreme Court to reach the right decision, namely, to lift the absurd roadblock and ease the life of the citizens. We parted with warm greetings from M”S. On our way back, we bought figs.

Zif Junction located on the crossroads that directs towards Road 356 to Yata. Yata is the district city of the southern Hebron Mountains. Usually, this junction is open to traffic. The nearby pillbox is unmanned. But the army and police are present occasionally, sometimes setting up a checkpoint and sometimes detaining residents from the big city. Often, the Israeli policemen inspect vehicles and distribute driving reports to Palestinian vehicles. s
