Beit Furik, 15/09/05 AMWatchers: Micky F., Deborah L. (reporting) The Beit Furik checkpoint is suppose to be open from 6:00AM. We had gotten complaints that it does not open on time so we went to check. We arrived at 6:02AM. The checkpoint was not open. There were some soldiers up in the tower who were still on the night shift. About 50 pedestrians and 11 vehicles were waiting. We called E. the battalion comm. and left a message with his beeper. A. the company comm. did not answer. G. (Spokesman of the brigade, did not answer. There was no answer at the DCO or at the brigade. The IDF humanitarian ctr. answered and we told them the problem.Pedestrians continued to gather until there were about 100. The soldiers from the tower kept shouting “Get back, get back”(in Arabic) even though we were all at least 20 meters from the checkpoint itself. We shouted up at him, “Why is the checkpoint not open? It is suppose to open at six .” The soldier answered back “Shut your mouths.” At 6:23AM after again demanding that the people move back, we heard a soldier shoot from the tower. At 6:30PM the morning shift arrived. sergeant S. the officer of the checkpoint, came up to us and told us that the drivers had not woken up and it is not in his authority to wake them up and that was why they were late. He told us it was worth making a complaint about this. He immediately let all the people pass through and started the vehicle line as well. With in minutes the pedestrian line cleared. When one truck was examined very carefully and it took a long time, another vehicle line was formed. At 7:15AM we left.At 9:00AM when I arrived home, I called A. but there was still no answer. I contacted E. and he said he would take care of the problem.
