Beit Iba, Thursday, 9.2.2006, AMObservers: Ruthie W., Estie S., Hadassah T. (reporting)A very cold and stormy winter’s day. Heavy clouds cover the skies, rain the whole way, bitterly cold, mist all of which suits the sights we see.8.20 Beit IbaThe passage flows with rain and a strong stream. People try to bypass and the soldiers scream at them and do not allow them to do so. The way through the water is deep and dangerous, humiliating. We ask, practically begging that they be allowed to by-pass. There are not that many people but the soldiers are not willing to listen. Even when we ask that they put down some planks they refuse saying “Do it yourselves” and that is what we do pulling and shoving trees on the path so as to make some sort of passage.A woman coming from Nablus wants to go through but is not allowed to do so even though in the horrible weather she has to go back.We read this week correspondence about Beit Iba and the length our stay there. We refuse to respond. We do what we can and the wisest way to answer is to be silent.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
