Beit Iba, ShaveShomron, Tuesday 7.3.06 AMObservers: Shlomit S, Ruti C, Maya M, Elinoar (reporting) 07:30-09:30 On our way from Jubara, at “Shomron” intersection (Deir Sharaf) we encounter a roadblock. While two of us go on to Shave Shomron (the construction of the wall is nearly finished), the other two remain and watch the roadblock for about 30 minutes. Taxi and bus passengers are told to get out of the vehicles and their IDs are checked. Beit Iba – At first it seems like a regular, depressing routine. Only a few people pass. Jenin, Tulkarm, even Beit Lid and other neighbouring villages are sent once again through Al Badhan on their way back from Nablus. There’s nothing we can do about this scandalous harassment, we have to tell them. Then they come, the notorious “Women in Blue” – the tall one with her Scarlett O’Hara straw-hat, the short one with the squeaky voice. After handing cookies and vowing eternal love to the soldiers they turn to us, spoiling for a fight. The short one starts cursing us, screaming “scum! scum!” and other pleasantries. The tall one encourages her. I insisted that as long as they didn’t touch us physically we shouldn’t react (not everybody agreed), nor should we call the police, it would be futile. The soldiers seemed amused, the Palestinians stunned. One soldier’s parting shot was: “we love you! All IDF love you!” (not us, of course, them).

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
