Beit Iba, Tuesday, 21.3.2006, PMObservers: Tami G., Ariela K., Amit B. and an American guest.Natanya translating. 14.45 At the entrance there are no cars or people. Waiting to leave Nablus are 6 trucks and a heavy load of people who say they have been waiting an hour and only one turnstile is working. The commander, Nadav says he does not have enough soldiers to open another turnstile. We phoned Gil, the spokesman of the brigade who promised to deal with this and after 15 minutes more soldiers arrived and another turnstile was opened. In the hut is a detainee with handcuffs on his hands which were behind his back and who said he had been there three hours. The commander would not tell us the reason and only said that he would be fetched (by the police? By the Secret service?) 15.00 The pace of the checking has quickened and two turnstiles are working. Suddenly a girl who has passed the checkpoint is called back by a soldier. She continued on her way and he ran after her with his weapon at the ready while he called her “a daughter of a prostitute” and brought her back. We spoke to her. She was a student from Anabta who is studying at El Najach. Because of the separation she has to pass at Al Badhan and she refused to go back. Her ID was taken from her and only after we persuaded her to do so did she go back and it was returned to her. 15.10 A bus arrives from Nablus and the people have to alight and go to the pedestrian line.. Another line without x-ray is opened for those over 40. Now there are more detainees and it appears that there is no key to the gate and they have to jump over the railings, 3 inside, 4 outside. After a few minutes most of them get their IDs back . Evidently they had tried to push and as punishment were sent back to the end of the line. Two detainees were left, the one who was originally there, and a second, both handcuffed. The more veteran of the two suffers from kidney stones and needs to drink. We asked the second lieutenant if we could give him water and he said that that was the work of the soldiers and gave him water (not ours). Their names were written down and their phone numbers and we will phone later. Many girls are sent back, all those who live in Tulkarm and have to go to Al Badhan. When we passed the crossroads of Tapuach 59 cars were waiting.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
