Beit Iba, Monday 10.4.2006 AM. Observers: Shiri V. (guest) Roni S. (reporting)Natanya translating. 10.25 No line of cars at the entrance to Nablus. Those which do arrive there are checked quickly and allowed to pass. The drivers tell us that the checkpoint at Jit is jammed but as we could not drive there we phoned Mickey Fisher to tell her. Practically no pedestrians but whoever does come passed quickly. 16-30 year olds are not allowed to pass. The soldiers say that all others can enter Nablus without a problem. It is a holiday today and that is why there is such little movement. 5 detainees are in the jorra because they tried to bypass the checkpoint and were caught. They are being checked, not punished but the commander says that dafke they do deserve to be punished because they had to be chased on the hills. There is no key to the jorra and they have to jump over the wall. When I am surprised at this the commander asks us to complain that only one turnstile is working. He has already complained himself that this leads to pressure and to long lines and he thinks if we do so too it may help. 10.40 Another 3 detainees who were on the hills and maybe because of our questions they are quickly checked. 11.00We leave

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
