Three detainees are being punished. They arrived not through the line of checkpoints, but from the side. They are “being educated” but we are promised that they won’t be detained for the full four hours. The rules at this moment: until 08:30 everyone passes except youngsters aged 15-39. Buses from Nablus do not come out. At 08:30 the order is changed: No residents of Jenin District may pass!After additional clarification – after all the students, women and elderly do pass (not because of stupidity – according to the Anabta checkpoint commander – a great term to use instead of “judgment”). A youngster arrives with a large and heavy package. We did not manage to see whether he stood in line or walked directly to the checking station. In a thorough check four pipe charges were found. The youngster was handcuffed and put in the pen. Another officer arrived.The strange thing was that during this whole process, the crowd was not moved back, nor were we. We left at 09:45.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
