Beit Iba
Beit Iba, Monday, 15.5.06 AMObservers: Ruhama S, Leah A, Rachel A (reporting) Beit Iba08:20-09:00 – the soldiers at the checkpoint are relaxed. Entry and exit free, almost without check. The officer says that the paucity of people is because of Nakhba Day. And it seems that the easing also derives from that reason, though the logic is not understandable. There is free exit of students from Nablus to Tulkarm and Jenin – something we haven’t seen for a long time.A taxi driver who comes every morning from Qalqiliya asks for a MachsomWatch team at Jit Junction, since the checkpoint there works in the morning hours and delays traffic for long hours. Shavei ShomronWe went up to the checkpoint to see what is happening. The road is blocked with large cubes, and the passage is snakelike. A taxi driver whose car keys were taken by the soldiers, after they caught him driving on an illegal road, is asking for our help. He is on the prohibited list and has no permit to earn a livelihood. A DCO jeep passes and the driver promises to deal with him and to get back his keys.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
