Beit Iba, Sunday, 4.6.06 AMObservers: Racheli M, Rachel A (reporting) On our way from Qalqiliya Checkpoint – Fundouk – Jit to Beit Iba, no rolling checkpoints, almost no traffic on the road. Beit Iba07:00 – the checkpoint is not busy at this hour. A bus from Nablus in the direction of Jericho: passengers aged 18-25 are taken off for inspection, and then continue on their way.Eight detainees whose documents have been taken for checking are released a few minutes after we arrive. The officer on the spot reports on the day’s restrictions. Ages 18-25 are not allowed to exit Nablus. University studies are over.Pedestrian traffic in both directions is fast and the checks are superficial. 09:00 – the checkpoint is busy with a lot of pedestrians and trucks that are waiting for inspection on their way to Nablus. A telephone clarification about the possibility of Koshin drivers to enter Nablus elicits a new order (according to the officer) that obliges all Koshin drivers (taxi or other) to equip themselves with permits to enter the city. It is not clear whether the permits are given by a quota or to all applicants. Till now drivers could enter without permits.

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.

    • Qalqilya is surrounded on all sides by the separation barrier. The only exit from the city is in the east of the city on the road that leaves the city in an easterly direction. This is where the checkpoint was located. When the checkpoint was active until 2009 our shifts watched long queues of cars being inspected at the only exit from the city to the West Bank. The checkpoint was canceled, but there is a military presence at the entrance to the city.
