Beit Iba, 12.7.2006, Wednesday afternoonObservers: Tammie C. Sarah P. Raya I. (reporting), Natanya translating15.50 – The soldiers at the checkpoint told us “not to disturb them in their work.” There is a new unit at the checkpoint. About 150 people waiting and the checking is slow. In the enclosure are 5 detainees, one of whom has diabetes. He shows a doctor’s letter but there is no one there who reads Arabic. Tammie speaks to Dalia Bassa and I with the humanitarian center. Besides this there is nothing that we can do to breach this wall of silence. 16.15 – Young people who tried to cross through the hills are brought here from Kuchin, an action which is repeated and we saw the same last week and they are put into the enclosure. One of the soldiers says to us “Go to Lebanon. There is nothing for you to do here.” This shows the feeling towards us and this is the day that the war has begun. They already know that 4 soldiers have been killed even though the media has not reported this.16.35 – Two are freed and also the diabetes sufferer because of the unremitting treatment of Tammie. It seems that the shift which changed did not give out the information on the detainees. 16.40 – Those who tried to cross through the hills are freed one by one. 17.10 – The village of Jit 25 taxis are waiting. I get a call from the humanitarian centre asking for more information about the diabetes sufferer. This shows that though they also work slowly but they do their work and I say he has been freed.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
