Beit Iba, Wed. AM, 26.07.06Observers: Elisheva A., Inbal R. (reporting)Summary:The area of Nablus is under closure. For the last few weeks we have been seeing more and more people detained at the checkpoint as a punishment. It is important to report this to the humanitarian hotline, it is sometimes possible to shorten the length of the torture this way.Beit Iba8:30-9:20 – All the residents of the Nablus area (about 150,000), between the ages of 15 and 35 are not allowed to leave through the checkpoint. It is forbidden for taxis to go in and out at all. Obviously, these restrictions decrease the lines at the checkpoint, and the traffic is generally light. The entrance to the city is permitted, by foot, after inspection. The entrance of vehicles, only with a special permit. Buses go through the checkpoint on the way to the “hadj” in Mecca, and the passengers ask us to hurry the soldiers, since they have a long journey to Saudi Arabia.6 detainees being punished (supposedly for “clarification”). They say that they have been held for 2 hours, the soldiers claim that this is an exaggeration. They are released, and we don’t know if the clarification which we made at the humanitarian hotline contributed to this or not. The officer in charge of the pedestrian crossing speaks fluent Arabic, and is quite polite towards the people. The officer and the DCO representative arrive at the checkpoint and spend about half an hour with an elderly man who asked for their help. The officer filled out forms for the Palestinian in Arabic.

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
