Beit Iba, Wednesday PM, 31.5.2006Observers; Debra L. Ofra guest, Raya I. Semadar H. (reporting)Natanya translating16.10 About 20 cars including a bus at the exit. This is the first time that we have seen a long line of people waiting at the entrance to Nablus. The IDs are checked and the line moves slowly. About 70 people waiting to leave Nablus. There was a humanitarian line for the very old and women. Those of 45 wait in the ordinary line. The commander receives us irritably. 3 detainees one of whom a young boy is handcuffed and his eyes blindfolded. We ask why and he says that he was caught with grenades and has been detained for some hours at the checkpoint and will be taken for interrogation. Debra phoned the centre and Noam says he knows the boy has been there an hour and a half and will wait another hour until he intervenes. The boy has not simply stole sweets and he could have harmed the soldier and us. Debra said after seeing how the boy was suffering from the handcuffs that it was not the soldiers task to torture him and that he should be taken quickly from the place. The second man was freed 5 minutes after we arrived. He had bypassed the line.Amongst the people waiting to enter Nablus a man asked for our help as he had to undergo an operation on his leg and it was hard from him to stand. We asked the soldier to allow him to pass and this was done. Crossroads Jit 2 cars and a detained taxi….17.00

A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
