BEIT IBA, Sunday 22 August 2004 AMObservers: Dafna A., Naomi K. (reporting) colour=red>There were long lines of women and men (separate) on both sides of the checkpoint. Several minutes after we arrived and began to ask questions, the representatives of the District Coordinating Office (DCO) arrived and began letting people through rapidly [ the DCO is the army section that handles civilian matters; it generally has representatives at the checkpoints, ostensibly to alleviate the lot of the Palestinians]. Was it a coincidence? As one of the people in line said to me: “Our lives are run according to the moods of the soldiers.”A young man arrived with a child (his brother), and an older man and woman (the parents). The young man, who spoke Hebrew, had no permit, while the others did. He claimed he had to go through with them because the child had cancer and needed treatment in Israel and he was the only one who could talk to the doctors. But since he had neither medical documents attesting to the illness, nor any referral for treatment, we could not help him.(We also visited Irtah and Jubara. See the relevant report under the Tulkarm region.)

    • A perimeter checkpoint west of the city of Nablus. Operated from 2001 to 2009 as one of the four permanent checkpoints closing on Nablus: Beit Furik and Awarta to the east and Hawara to the south. A pedestrian-only checkpoint, where MachsomWatch volunteers were present daily for several hours in the morning and afternoon to document the thousands of Palestinians waiting for hours in long queues with no shelter in the heat or rain, to leave the district city for anywhere else in the West Bank. From March 2009, as part of the easing of the Palestinian movement in the West Bank, it was abolished, without a trace, and without any adverse change in the security situation.
