car trouble
Bethlehem. Tuesday PM, 10-5-05Observers: Yael I., Hana C. and Ilana D. (reporting) From 2:15 to 5:30 PM We were asked by Haya to deliver papers in Beit Ummar, so we only glimpsed at BEthlehem CP 300 where a man whose truck had been grounded for a month for transporting an illegal made an appointment for the next morning with the GSS investigator with whom he used to work. There were many cars parked along the road, but there was no queue of cars waiting to enter. After the turn-off to the tunnel road an impromptu CP had held up a car whose driver had a blue Id and his passenger West Bank papers, but also a sheet attesting that he had to go appear in court. They would both be taken to CP 300 to wait there for the investigator. Our car started to make funny noises and heated up after Al Khadr, where we had observed the usual hustle and bustle and we drove into the turn-off to Efrat-North (Al Khadr-South) to decide how to proceed. A jeep with extremely nice reservists stopped to help and emptied all their canteens into our empty tank. They told us we could proceed without fear, but we decided nevertheless to enter the gas station at the Etzion junction to check a little more in depth. Just as we entered, the motor stalled. There was no mechanic, but a very helpful young man – “What, you don’t know El’ad? Everyone in the ‘gush’ knows him!” diagnosed a faulty fan and called an electrician. He was also extremely polite and kind and fixed the fan, but claimed that there was something wrong with the compressor. However, he said that we could safely drive home. We felt very badly to have to admit how nice and kind these men, who didn’t want to accept any payment had been. Maybe if we hadn’t taken off our MW-badges their behavior would have been different. After a few kilometers just past the entrance to El’azar the car stalled and wouldn’t budge. We called Shagrir and after having waited for some time the same jolly reservists of the beginning of our saga made a U-turn to find out how we fared. They were told that help was on the way, but nevertheless Yaron left us his cell-phone number and urged us not to hesitate to call in case we needed any help. The tow-truck took the car and us straight into the garage in Talpiyot. The papers, which we had not been able to deliver, were handed over to Ruti R. who will take them to their destination to-morrow morning.

Beit Ummar
The Gush Etzion-Hebron road - which is the main axis of the southern Hebron Mountains - passes through the boundaries of the village. Many incidents of stone throwing occurred on this section of road. There is a checkpoint at the entrance to the village.
In March 2006, a 25-dunam land seizure order was issued around the settlement for the purpose of establishing a "special security area" (SHBM) and a warning fence around the nearby settlement, Carmei Tzur. In April 2019, 401 dunams of the land of the villages of Beit Omer and Halhul were expropriated for the purpose of paving a road that bypasses the house of Omer to the east. Demonstrations are held by the villagers against the seizure of land with the participation of Palestinian, Israeli and international activists.
