Abu Dis, Wadi Nar (Container) Tues. 19.07.05 p.m.Observers: Rina H., Julia W., Rahel W. (reporting)A guestWhen we arrived at the former pishpash, we saw a BP jeep parked there checking everyone climbing over the wall (where barbed wire had been placed to impede the climbers but which had then been pushed away). Down the road where bars had been removed from the metal fence allowed people to wedge themselves through, there was another border police jeep stopping people. At the Cliff Hotel, there were 3 border police jeeps and about 10 BPs there. There were no changes in the hotel area.We parked the car and walked through the monastery where there were three more BPs on the grounds. We met our driver and went to Wadi Nar. He told us that the Container had been closed for 4 days but was open today. When we arrived, we found long lines of vehicles heading in both directions. The road leading to the Old Kedar Road was closed. Military police, rather than BP are now manning the CP, and they were having a tough time of it. The lines were long and even though there were more people doing the checking, and two lanes rather than one were leading toward Bethlehem, there were never fewer than 15 vehicles waiting to get through. Considering that it was blazing hot and very dry and dusty, the wait was especially unpleasant. The MPs were correct, but less than efficient. As we were getting ready to leave, a driver with a truck carrying milk and heading for Bethlehem and Hebron tried to come through the road from the Old Kedar Road. The MPs shouted at him and told him he couldn’t, even though he had a permit, because he had come from Tulkarm. After several phone calls and a lot of pleading and arguing, the MPs finally agreed that the truck could go through, but not the drivers, if they could get someone from Hebron or Bethlehem to drive the truck. We called W. from the BP who said that he would take care of the matter. Within about 5 minutes, the truck and its drivers from Tulkarm were allowed through. We called W. to thank him for his efforts, but there was no answer. Just left the message. We turned to W. from the BP this time for his assistance. However, with the Military Police now in control, we will need new contact numbers when assistance is needed. Does anyone have information on this?Uncomfortably hot and dry but relatively uneventful shift.
