Ayal Crossing

4:30 a.m. 

Today is the first opening day since the closure; the number of those crossing is larger than normal.  The traffic flows without any stoppages at the turnstile.

We carried out the process laid out by the manager of the crossing:  we walked the length of the exit fence and, using the lower handle, we opened the gate and pressed the black key, a guard immediately appeared and together we approached the fence.  We saw that an awning had been put up for part of the queue and there were barriers to form an orderly queue.  We parted from the guard with the promise that we would be able to return to the fence later.

At the exit the labourers reported that the inspection is short and that all the checkpoints are functioning.  At this point the atmosphere was optimistic.


5:15 a.m.

We tried to call the guard again but, instead of him the unarmed manager appeared and asserted that he is unable to accompany us to the fence and because of pressure of work he is unable to send us a guard.  We reminded him of the agreement but he stuck to his position.

At the labourers' exit instead of a door, there is a turnstile which means that there is no way of getting back, and one person who tried to return was forced to wait until we drew the attention of the manager to him.


6:00 a.m.

We suddenly saw Snait and Nur who had come from Irta, they went straight to the fence and the guard and the manager came over immediately, we joined them and they sent us all away.


6:30 a.m.

We drove by the Eliyahu crossing, which was empty.  By mistake we got into the queue of Israeli Arabs and experienced what that is like.

 

Ras Atiya

7:00 a.m.

On the way we saw a new gate, still being built, and soldiers guarding the work there.

When we got to Ras Atiya we found out that the local gate will remain there in future.

 

Chabalah

7:30 a.m. 

A group of 5 labourers at a time is taken into the inspection room for 5 minutes, and so on.

The owner of a garden centre crossed with his pick-up truck full of plants and waited impatiently for his labourers to go through the inspection.  He told us that since the erection of the fence his garden centre has been cut in two; half inside the fence and half outside it.  At the same time a greenhouse was destroyed and land confiscated without any compensation.  He wastes work time every day while they inspect his labourers.

He and another group of people have employed the services of the lawyer Amnon Zichroni.

    • Eliyahu CP (109) / Crossing This checkpoint, also known as the Fruit Crossing, is one of the main checkpoints between Israel and the West Bank. It is located on Route 55 between Alfei Menashe and the turn to Qalqilya and Zufin, more than 4 km east of the Green Line, in the separation fence, which separates Qalqilya from its lands to the south, thus leaving Alfei Menashe West of the fence - the Seam Zone. This checkpoint, a few kilometers across the Green Line, is intended for "Israeli settlement in the West Bank and the population of the Seam Zone." It is managed by a civil company. Palestinians with a special permit for their lands in the seam area are also allowed to pass through it, on foot, and sometimes by car.

    •   Eyal Checkpoint is intended for pedestrians and Palestinians only. This is the main barrier for workers to cross from the center of the West Bank. Workers with a work permit to enter Israel can pass through it for trade, medicine, and visiting prisoners. The checkpoint was built on the Green Line north of Qalqilya in the separation barrier that surrounds the city. The checkpoint began operating in 2004 by the military. Opening hours on weekdays from 04:00 to 19:00. We started holding shifts there in 2007. We arrived at the checkpoint before it opened at 4 in the morning. We reported on the difficult conditions and the long and cramped queues of workers who must continue their journey by commuting to work throughout Israel. At the end of June 2009, the checkpoint was operated by a civil security company, The transit time has been gradually shortened, today it is faster, but the Palestinians still have to arrive very early to make it to the transportation. Usually, about 15,000 people pass through.

      The Habla checkpoint (1393) was established on the lands of the residents of Qalqilya, on the short road that

      connected it for centuries to the nearby town of Habla. The separation barrier intersects this road twice and cut off the residents of Qalqilya from their lands in the seam zone.(between the fence and the green line).
      There is a passage under Road 55 that connects Qalqilya to the sabotage This agricultural barrier is used by the farmers and nursery owners established along Road 55 from the Green Line and on both sides of the kurkar road leading to the checkpoint.
      This agricultural checkpoint serves the residents of Arab a-Ramadin al-Janoubi (detached from the West Bank), who pass through it to the West Bank and back to their homes. The opening hours (3 times a day) of this agricultural checkpoint are longer than usual, about an hour (recently shortened to 45 minutes), and are coordinated with the transportation hours of a-Ramadin children studying in the occupied in the West Bank.

    • The checkpoint is presently on the Separation Barrier roadway, manned and open 12 hours a day, from 6:30 to 18:30. West of it is the large Seam Line village whose school is attended by children from the nearby villages east of the Barrier and many of whose inhabitants have permits to work in Israel. How long this checkpoint will remain in place is unknown, since construction of the Separation Wall, just by the settlement of Alfe Menashe, east of the present Separation Barrier, is endless, as is the creation of a new road and, obviously, a new checkpoint.
