Hawwara, Wednesday 1.6.05 PMWatchers: Nitzah G. Devorkah A. Ayalet B.(reporting)Natanya translating.South Hawarra which was turned into a market then into a taxi rank is now empty. Evidently a punishment by the border police. While we were there few people passing in both direction at a quick pace including cars.14.20 South Tapuach. Cars pass at a reasonable pace. The taxi drivers tell us about a very difficult checkpoint to the South which takes about 2 hours to pass. We could not quite make out the name….Luban Asrakiah?14.40 8 minutes from south to north….we saw no cars waiting in the other directions.15.00 South Hawarra. For about 1 kilometre before the car park 10s of taxis parked on the sides of the road and many pedestrians. The parking lot which was cleared three days previously of all the traders is now empty except for 11 cars. The drivers tell us that about 2 hours previously they were not allowed to enter and those already there were chased out. At the south entrance are 2 border police who are not talking to us. After a minute a jeep comes up and the commander O. explains to us politely that the car park has been closed as a punishment because in the morning a soldier had been ridden over?????? And it is necessary to “educate” them. We understood that this was his doing. When we tried to check from where this order had come he began to stammer and pointing upwards said “From there.” We phoned R. at the DCO and 45 minutes later he phoned us and said that the order had been cancelled.15.30 North Hawarra. The commander N. tells us where to stand and only to talk to him.2 children who say that they are 14 are taken from a bus which still stands at the entrance to Nablus are in the area of detention with the representative of the DCO H. The people in the bus none of whom were connected with the boys are standing around. One of the women says that she will inform the boys’ parents and the people get on to the bus. It seems that there has been a warning about children, We phone R. and in the meantime H. is on the line to A. about the same thing. We were not allowed to talk to the boys but we did so for some minutes afterwards.15.50 South Hawarra. The parking lot has returned to its original use by order of R.16.00 North Hawarra. The mother of one of the boys from Ascar arrives with another woman and the two boys are freed. A New detainee from Kfar Kassem who has come for dental work returns and the police are called for.16.20 A short argument with N. about where we stand. 3 young men from Awarta are detained and they seem to be amused by this and an older fellow stands outside the hut area.16.35 2 jeeps arrive together with sirens, blinking lights and hooting and stop with a scream of brakes. 5 soldiers jump out and rush towards a bus which is being checked and then jump out and run to another bus from which they take a young man whom they put on the jeep and leave with as much fuss and fury as they came. This took about a minute and from a rude remark I understood that he had tried to get past the checkpoint and jumped on to the bus. We did not see any violence used against him. And in the meantime a blue policeman has arrived and is interviewing the Israeli.17.00 No detainees. As we leave two jeeps again rush up in the same wild manner as before and stand together at the entrance to the taxirank. We stop on the other side of the road. About 5 soldiers are milling around and it seems that there is the usual noise at the taxi rank. One of the drivers pressed all the time on the has pedal making a terrible noise. Suddenly all 5 of them almost attack our car and demand our IDs. When we demanded to see theirs they disappeared except for one , evidently the O. we had seen previously.I gave one of the regulars my phone number but up to now he has not phoned to report anything irregular.17.13 16 cars from south to north, 4 cars from north to south
