Hawwara, Beit Furik, Jabara, Monday 3.10.2005 PMWatchers: Hagar L. Merav A. (reporting)Natanya translating.A short watch on the eve of the holiday.13.45 Za’atara checkpoint- From the west two cars and from the north empty so we did not stop.No checkpoint at Hawarra itself. We visited the home of A. K. at Awarta. He suffers from sugar and has gone blind. We brought him medicine and used clothing at the request of Yehuda M.14.15 – We went through the DCO which was closed and also the back to back. Drivers told us it had been closed at about 14.00.14.30 Beit Furik – Little movement and no detainees. No alert in view of what had happened the previous day. Everyone can pass including men from 15-30 and the soldiers say the checkpoint will be open until 8.00.The taxi drivers say that in the morning there were problems. The checkpoint was open but only the sick were allowed to pass. Everyone is very carefully checked which makes long lines. They claim cars were only passed through at 9.00.14.50 Hawarra – No detainees and much traffic. Cars take about half an hour to get out of Nablus. People going in are checked randomly by the border police. Their details are written down and they are allowed to procede. At the humanitarian line ids are checked and this again causes pressure every now and again and then people prefer to pass in the ordinary line. This includes women in traditional dress.Lieutenant A., captain of the checkpoint says that between 13.00 to 15.00 they will be reinforced by another captain. We see that this reinforcement is just leaving. We tell A. who says that there are no special evaluations concerning Ramadan.A student who studies in Nablus and lives in one of the surrounding villages approaches us. Each day he goes in and out and each day he is detained. It seems that his id number appears in a shortened form but he does not understand why he has to undergo this each day. We asked A. if there was nothing that could be done and he said no . It does not seem important that each day the student is detained for a few minutes even though he also knows that this can take half an hour. He does not seem to think that he needs to explain anything to the student. He tells him he should go and change the id.The entire time that we were there, there were no detainees or out of the ordinary events even though there was a lot of pressure and the soldiers did not have much patience. 15.55 – A surprise checkpoint appears at the crossroads of Hawarra, a bit beyond the crossroads, a hammer and the spike barriers on the road and about 10 cars waiting while ids are checked. 16.05 – At the crossroads of Git another hammer and a spike barrier but cars are passed without being checked and there is no line.16.20 Jabara – No checkpoint on the lower road. At the crossroads 15 detainees. 10 from Jabara without permits and 5 illegals. The soldiers say that they have been delayed an hour but the men say since the morning. A few minutes after we appear though those from Jabara are allowed to go and then the police arrive and start to deal with the illegals.16.45 – we leave
