Za’atra, Hawwara, Beit Furik, Monday 12.9.2005 PMWatchers. Macky S. Hagit F. Daphna P. (reporting)Natanya translating.14.30 Both checkpoints at Za’arta have passed to the Border Police. The checkpoint from the west is empty, from the north 7 cars. In the middle of the checkpoint building has been started.14.50 Git- We hand over medicines from an Israeli woman doctor, a member of Doctors for Human rights to Zachariah. Medicines are meant for the people in the village. 15.10 hawarra- Taxis and traders at work.15.20 Hawarra- There is great pressure at the checkpoint, second lieutenant A. tells us there has been an alarm. About 50 people waiting crowded together after they have already passed the X-ray device and the carousel. And wait for their documents to be checked and this is done very slowly by three military police. Behind the carousles and the X-ray device Another 50 people. This is the first day, according to the commander, that the checkpoint is quiet as on pervious days there have been problems, discovery of explosives and shooting.Second lieutenant N. of the military police deals the entire times with the problems surrounding the ids which occur all the time. 2 Polite captains who are on the spot explain to us what is happening but seem to be reconciled to the amount of time everything takes and do not try to hurry matters. “Everyone has to suffer because of “one wanted person.” We ask why more soldiers and checking points are not added as there are soldiers available but he says that one computer is not working and the written details are secret and to be spread all over the place. Is it that when words are used such as secret or strategice value, etc. we are not to ask further?15.45- One detainee in the enclosure. Leiutenant A. says this is an important security matter as people are not detained for no reason.15.50 – Students are stopped the entire time and checked for a few minutes. But one is detained while his friends wait patiently and obediently next to the checkpoint. second lieutenant N. checks …maybe the details are forged.? 40 minutes later he is freed. 16.45 – We leave Beit Furik. The “security” detainee is still there and A. explains that he has been in touch with the company, if this is a case for the Secret Service why is the company involved?17.00 Beit Furik- Little movement. Some of the soldiers seems bored and try to engage us in the political discussion which we avoid. The taxi drivers complain about long wait for the checkpoint to open in the morning.17.30 Back to Hawarra- The detainee is still there, patient and without hope. He studies Islam at El-Najach University and lives in a village near Ramallah. Since the beginning of the university year this is the 5th time that he has been detained, that is each time he passes. Each time he is made to wait hours and then released. Once they took him for questioning with his eyes blindfolded and in hadcuffs. His uncle is on the wanted list and so the entire family has problems. He wants to do his doctorate in Jordan but because of his uncle the state has refused permission. He says that Israel claims that she only makes problems for those that are actually wanted but in fact entire families suffer. We speak to the two young captains about the man. If he is wanted why don’t they come to fetch him, and if not why should he not be freed. N. suggests, maybe he is approaching terrorist activities and this way he knows he is being watched. We take the man’s details and leave. On our way back we phone the war division who tells us that they do not owe us explanations and to phone the DCO. In both places they have never heard of the detainee until we phoned. When we phone again we are told that he has been released after more than 2 hours. 18.00 – Zatara is empty.
